Joy Randle - Palmer Scholar 2007

When did you start at Palmer Scholars?

I was introduced to Palmer Scholars by my favorite teacher at Lincoln High School, Dr. Steve Schain, and I received my scholarship during my senior year in 2007.

Where are you currently in your life?

I graduated from The Evergreen State College in 2012 with a BA in Liberal Arts, focusing on Human Resources—though I've never worked a day in HR. Over the years, I've explored various fields, including legal, insurance, administration, management, and the nonprofit sector. During the pandemic, I realized that my passion for advocacy and writing might be better suited for law. After taking the LSAT and scoring a 147, I was accepted into several law schools across the country. However, my law school dream is currently on hold as I balance being a working single parent to my wonderful 9-year-old.

Recently, I was diagnosed with ADHD, which has brought clarity and helped me better understand myself. I decided to leave the corporate world and pursue entrepreneurship full-time. I've launched my website, www.SparxofJoy.com, and I'm currently working with a life coach to market my grant writing services. Although I haven’t added my templates for purchase yet, stay tuned! I’ve also signed my first client, and it's exciting to embark on this journey of freedom, intentional work, and giving back to my community.

What advice do you have for current and future scholars?

  • The journey never ends; you can always change directions.

  • Your job is not who you are, it's just how you pay the bills.

  • In a truly free world, we’d be picking blackberries from the roadside instead of paying $3.99 at Whole Foods.

  • Find your village.

  • You are only alone in your thoughts.

  • Life isn't meant to be figured out; it’s meant to be lived.

  • Make peace with your past, and your future will be more peaceful.

  • A growth mindset can take you further than you ever imagined; a fixed mindset will keep you more limited than you realize.

 SUPPORT OUR MISSION TODAY!

Palmer Scholars acknowledges that our work is carried out on, and our office space is located within, occupied Coast Salish land, specifically that of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians. We pay respect to Coast Salish Elders past and present and extend that respect to their descendants and to all Indigenous peoples. To acknowledge this land is to recognize its longer history and our place in that history; it is to recognize these lands and waters and their significance for the peoples who lived and continue to live in this region, whose practices and spiritualties were and are tied to the land and the water, and whose lives continue to enrich and develop in relationship to the land, waters, and other inhabitants today.

We also pause to recognize and acknowledge the labor upon which our country, state, and institutions are built.

We remember that our country is built on the labor of enslaved people who were kidnapped and brought to the U.S. from the African continent and recognize the continued contribution of their survivors. We also acknowledge all immigrant labor, including voluntary, involuntary, trafficked, forced, and undocumented peoples who contributed to the building of the country and continue to serve within our labor force. We acknowledge all unpaid care-giving labor.

To the people who contributed this immeasurable work and their descendants, we acknowledge our/their indelible mark on the spaces in which we operate today. It is our collective responsibility to critically interrogate these histories, to repair harm, and to honor, protect, and sustain this land.
