Palmer Scholars Welcomes New CEO, Tricia Speid, to Lead Organization’s Vision for Youth Empowerment

Tacoma, WA – Palmer Scholars is excited to announce the appointment of Tricia Speid as Chief Executive Officer, effective November 6, 2024. Tricia’s deep commitment to educational equity, combined with her proven experience in K-12 education, mentorship, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) leadership, makes her an invaluable addition to Palmer Scholars as we continue our mission of bridging the gap between potential and opportunity for young adults of color in Pierce County.

Reflecting on her new role, Tricia shared,

"Joining Palmer Scholars aligns with my passion and commitment to supporting young people in achieving their dreams. As a first-generation Jamaican immigrant who has experienced the transformative power of mentorship and opportunity, I am honored to lead Palmer Scholars. Together, with unwavering commitment, we will expand access, resources, and support for young adults of color, empowering each scholar to realize their fullest potential and create the lives they deserve.”

Tricia brings over 25 years of experience from the nonprofit and educational sectors. Most recently, as Assistant Director of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Puget Sound, she led the Access Program to an impressive 100% retention and graduation rate for first-generation, low-income students. Her steadfast dedication to fostering inclusive educational environments and empowering underrepresented communities aligns perfectly with the goals and values of Palmer Scholars.

The Board of Directors is thrilled to welcome Tricia, a dynamic leader whose expertise and vision will guide Palmer Scholars into the future, ensuring more young adults of color in Pierce County have the support and resources they need to achieve their dreams.

Additionally, Palmer Scholars would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Helen McGovern-Pilant, who served as Interim Executive Director for the past four months. Helen’s dedication to equity and access in education has made a meaningful difference in the lives of our scholars, and her impact on the organization has been invaluable.

In partnership with Karras Consulting, a leader in executive search services in the Pacific Northwest, the Board’s Search Committee was committed to finding the right candidate to uphold and further Palmer Scholars’ mission.

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Tricia Speid. We look forward to an exciting and impactful future as we continue our work together to support the young people of Pierce County.

With gratitude,

Kacee Woods, Board President

 SUPPORT OUR MISSION TODAY!

Palmer Scholars acknowledges that our work is carried out on, and our office space is located within, occupied Coast Salish land, specifically that of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians. We pay respect to Coast Salish Elders past and present and extend that respect to their descendants and to all Indigenous peoples. To acknowledge this land is to recognize its longer history and our place in that history; it is to recognize these lands and waters and their significance for the peoples who lived and continue to live in this region, whose practices and spiritualties were and are tied to the land and the water, and whose lives continue to enrich and develop in relationship to the land, waters, and other inhabitants today.

We also pause to recognize and acknowledge the labor upon which our country, state, and institutions are built.

We remember that our country is built on the labor of enslaved people who were kidnapped and brought to the U.S. from the African continent and recognize the continued contribution of their survivors. We also acknowledge all immigrant labor, including voluntary, involuntary, trafficked, forced, and undocumented peoples who contributed to the building of the country and continue to serve within our labor force. We acknowledge all unpaid care-giving labor.

To the people who contributed this immeasurable work and their descendants, we acknowledge our/their indelible mark on the spaces in which we operate today. It is our collective responsibility to critically interrogate these histories, to repair harm, and to honor, protect, and sustain this land.
